Welcome to Fathom’s Summer of Change Social Innovation Internship!

Welcome to Fathom’s Summer of Change Social Innovation Internship!

Congratulations on your loved one’s summer internship. We are excited to be working with them over the summer. Fathom seeks to prepare young people to be architects of the 21st Century. We do this through our Summer of Change Social Innovation Challenge, which challenges students to identify their passions, needs and motivations, a community issue they care about and to leverage entrepreneurial problem solving to create a social business project to address it.

We looking forward to meeting with your loved one Monday, June 3rd, 2019, 9am at Lighthouse Christian Academy (5100 Blue Hole Rd, Antioch, TN 37013). We will meet June 3rd to July 12th every Monday through Friday between 9am to 1pm.

We realize this is likely your loved one’s first employment opportunity, which is what excites us at Fathom most. We’ve sent them a welcome email similar to this including a list of expectations for the first day and a weekly overview. Please see it below

“We recognize this may be your first job or you may be a little nervous, so we’ve planned your first day in order to help you settle in easily. Here is an outline of what you can expect:
  • First things first – get a good sleep the night before so you’re good and energized.
  • Next, report to the learning portable on the top of the hill- look for the blue Fathom directional signs.
  • Change Agents Facilitators will direct you to your team and ‘starter kit’
  • Then you will have a short on-boarding orientation with our Lead Change Agents Facilitator who will introduce you to our Change Agents program and summer challenges for your team
  • After that, you will work with your team and Change Agents Coach to identify your team roles and responsibilities
  • Finally, you will work with your Change Agents Coach to address your challenges, including developing project deliverables to address your challenges.

So what’s the dress code?

Our dress code is casual Monday through Thursdays, and business/school casual for Fridays (we will have team presentations each week). Please bring a sweater, jacket or hoodie of you may get cold inside the program space.

Now that you’re informed and hopefully more relaxed, a little more information on your internship. We’re sure you’re thinking to yourself “what will I be doing” during this internship. That’s not a bad question to be thinking but if you wanna best understand your internship, think in terms of “what will I be solving”. You’ll be working in teams to create a social business that addresses a community issue in Antioch.

While developing your social business, you’ll learn about and demonstrate skills necessary to create a viable business, improve your community and personalize your career path around fulling these goals. Here’s a week-by-week overview of what to expect during your summer internship.
Interns will be working in teams with a focus on one specific area of sustainable community development (governance, built environment, services, etc) with weekly deliverables that demonstrate learning and development goals each week.
  • Week 1 – Interns will work on individual activities to develop goals, identify their passions and explore what it means to be a Change Agent.

  • Week 2 – Interns will work in teams to canvas the Antioch community, conducting an asset-based map and community interviews to narrow down and identify a social problem they care about.

  • Week 3 – Interns will work individually to align their personal and professional goals around their social problem and in teams to ideate hypotheses for potential solutions.

  • Week 4 – Interns will work in teams to test their hypotheses by collecting feedback on idea and proposing intervention models for user adoption and behavior change.

  • Week 5 – Interns will work in teams to develop minimum viable products and social business models to address a social problem.
