Summer of Change: Change Agents Interns

INTRO:

Fathom is a Nashville-based social enterprise focused on youth-led innovation for sustainable community development. We are seeking up to eighty (80) students to work as Change Agents for the Antioch community. For this position, students will work in teams utilizing Fathom’s Change Agents social entrepreneurship curriculum to:

  1. Develop personal portfolios to promote work-life balance and professional development
  2. Conduct a community needs assessment to identify challenges facing the Antioch community 
  3. Prototype and pitch entrepreneurial solutions for community change

JOB SUMMARY:

We have positions open for 80 students who will be working with community partners in eight groups of ten students each, focused on entrepreneurial solutions to eight sectors of sustainable community development. The eight team focus on topics in the following areas: 

  1. Governance– effective and inclusive participation, representation and leadership
  2. Transportation and Connectivity– Good transport services and communication linking people to jobs, schools, health and other services
  3. Services– full range of appropriate, accessible public, private, community and voluntary services
  4. Environmental– providing places for people to live in an environmentally-friendly way
  5. Economy– flourishing and diverse local economy of small businesses and available jobs
  6. Housing and Built Environment– quality built environment with affordable and accessible housing and other buildings
  7. Social and Cultural– vibrant, harmonious and inclusive communities
  8. Equity– fair treatment and accessibility to resources for all community members 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Interns will work individually to complete their personal portfolios including SMART goals, vision boards, career alignments, industry and cost of living analysis
  • Interns will work together to form strong teams, decide on specific roles and divide outlined tasks
  • Interns will work in teams to conduct a community needs assessment including completing observational surveys and informational interviews
  • Interns will work in teams to identify a specific challenge facing the community and further researching contributing factors 
  • Interns will work in teams to ideate solutions to address identified challenges 
  • Interns will work in teams to develop business plans and prototypes to demonstrate their ideas
  • Interns will work in teams to pitch their solutions to local stakeholders 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

Ideal candidates for this position will have strong teamwork and communication skills and demonstrate a commitment and dedication to making Antioch a more innovative, equitable and sustainable community. No prior knowledge in subject areas is required but interest in entrepreneurship, research, design and/or community development is preferred. 

Qualifications for this position are as follows: 

  • Must attend or will be attending Metro Nashville Public High Schools in the Southeastern cluster, including Antioch, Glencliff and Cane Ridge High Schools in the 2019-2020 school year
  • Must be 14-16 years old as of June 2019
  • Must be available to work June 23rd to July 12th on Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM 
  • Must have transportation to and from programming space each day of internship (will be in Antioch location)
